Our Yunnan Gold Buds is made entirely of buds from the "Da Bai Hao" ("Big White Hair" in English) varietal tea plant. It was hand picked and small batch processed in early April, 2010 in Jinggu County of Pu-Erh Prefecture in Yunnan.
The dry leaves are a beautiful pure golden color and are completely covered by distinctive fuzzy "hair." This particular "Da Bai Hao" varietal is known for producing some of the fuzziest buds among all the cultivated tea varietals. The buds were oxidized to approximately 75% before undergoing wok firing in small batches to halt the oxidation and preserve the striking golden color and delicate structure of the young buds.
When steeped, this tea produces a liquor with a beautiful shade of deep golden red/brown. The distinctive malty sweetness of fine Yunnan black tea is definitely apparent in the aroma and flavor of the cup. The liquor is smooth, sweet, malty, brisk and astringent, making it one of the most refined black teas I have had the pleasure of trying this season. To my palate, this is a perfect black tea for a hearty and bracing morning cuppa Yunnan Hong Cha.
