Description
Up until this point, I have really tried to focus on compressed Pu-Erh, but I have been finding exceptionally good value and quality in some of the loose teas that I have been trying.  That being said, I decided to leave this tea exactly as I tasted it without any changes that could be brought about by adding moisture during the compression process.

This tea is from the fall harvest of 2004, and it was picked in Jinggu Dai and Yi Autonomous County of Pu-Erh Prefecture in southern Yunnan.  It was expertly fermented/ripened in the fall of 2004 at a small factory in Jinggu county, just north of Simao County/Pu-Erh city.  After the fermentation process was completed, the tea was dried and sorted by leaf size in a large, wind-tunnel grading/sorting machine.  Gong Ting (Imperial) is the smallest leaf grade, followed by Te Ji (super-fine), then grade 1, 2, 3 etc.  As with all Pu-Erh tea, leaf grade is merely an indication of size.  It is not necessarily an indication of quality.

The liquor of this Gong Ting grade tea is a deep reddish brown color and has an amazing clarity when held up to a light source.  The flavor is very smooth and mellow as a result of the roughly six years of aging in Jinggu.  Often, Gong Ting grade teas can have a strong "wo dui" (fermentation flavor) taste to them, and their mellow and sweet flavors can be lost behind this fermentation funkiness.  Aging has been very good to this tea, and a good 90% of the Wo Dui has dissipated, allowing the smooth, thick, mellow flavors to shine through.  I think the mellow, smooth, sweet, "comfortableness" of this particular tea is an excellent example of what an unblended ripe Pu-Erh really has the potential to be.  It is sure to be a favorite for all the ripe Pu-Erh heads out there.
